using my mobile in the hotel hall now so impossible :) to do, bu will be home on monday and got some minis to paint, so surly will figure sth out.

the most important thing is to have (for me) a lot of primers. not only black. a lot of brushes B-) and , well, a lot of time hhe.

prime. basic colors. specific colors. dip or shade. basing. paint adjustments.
that js the process

for some miniatures like dragons wyrms and all big beasts i do use mix of spray primers and paints. gives good effect.

i am not using airbrush so need to work with the stuff i got.

for some minis i was using dipping method, for some ink shading. dipping takes longer but leaves light colors untouched somewhat. ink by army painter leaves dirty film on minis. all whites, skin gets dirty. like on zombicide minis above

i have used ink for zombies. i got no photo yet. but zombies are dirty :) so it doesnt matter

So after looking at these again and again...I must say that I am rather curious as to how you do your bases. They all look really clean and not just simple paint on them.
: Re: painting examples by skolo
: skolo May 01, 2013, 03:14:14 AM
well, again, I use Army painter products. I just like them.
I do paint base in black, than put glue on it, see photos.

Next step is to put rocks or grass on it , plus add some extras (Games Workshop this time).
Next step would be adding grass and finishing base with red/white color for the master/minion.

Sometime you need pumice for the base. I have used it for Ice Wyrm from Tomb of Ice (Descent).
Will post photos later to show you how it looks like/works

skolo, what do think about the basing kits sold by Basecrafts?  Some of their crystal rocks and glitter rocks look like they'd be excellent for the elementals, or maybe even the skeleton captains.

Personally - since I didn't go Double Captain (Sorry, Auctorium!  :P) - I don't think I'll be doing many custom bases.  I don't want my minis to look weird standing in a patch of grass in the middle of carpeted dungeons, or standing on a stepping stone in the middle of the woods.
: Re: painting examples by skolo
: skolo May 03, 2013, 02:42:56 AM
to be honest I`m not a fan of using premade bases. Not for normal gamers, boradgames and skirmish. If you do that for tournaments or you`re an artist that want to show it somewhere - that is ok. For just plain gaming its not necessary to spend 1usd for one base, with 150 minis, its kind of expensive  8)

Very good work on display, especially like the Dragons.

I am looking forward to seeing how various people choose to do the miniatures for Myth, and the flood of painted images that are likely once the game starts to hit peoples homes.

I have not really painted miniatures for a long time, so Myth is me coming back to the world.  I will not be rushing into paining the miniatures, as I want to take my time in deciding the course to take first, and gaining as many ideas as possible from here and other sites.

Yeah, I remembered that, notice that I avoided saying that you are Dutch :). Rotterdam is not that far of a trip, we'll see once the game actually arrives.

@Voivod: no idea, but I do not know that many people that are into miniatures(this is my first ever minature boardgame) and I most of my friends do not even know about Kickstarter I think...
At the moment I'm actually living in Glasgow, I will be back in Breda at the end of June.

You can always have Skolos do the Heroes as a "proof of concept" while you do the minions. The heroes are the most important figures, but they'll be the hardest to paint (especially the !@#!%@ eyes!).

Minions are much easier:
* Spray prime in white.
* Color eyes red.
* Wash in brown to form shadows.
* Underpaint and glaze / basecoat in THIN layers of paint.
* Wash in brown to restore shadows.
* Paint metals.

Minions from easiest to hardest:
* Skeletons
* Ratmen and orcs w/out metals
* Ratmen and orcs w/ metals
* Elementals

Consider getting the various Reaper Learn to Paint Kits, after they're revised for their Bones lines. Vallejo Air Model Silver metallic looks the easiest to work with.

anyone using strong tone dip?
: Re: painting examples by skolo
: The Voivod June 09, 2013, 03:48:11 AM
I use it on my orcs and goblin. Gives nice results on goblin green  as well as the off-whites and browns I use on them.
Less result on dark red.

Nice stuff for a speed job.
: Re: painting examples by skolo
: skolo June 09, 2013, 04:11:21 AM
that is what i thought. dark tone looks dirty. that is nice on zombies but not so much on human skin
: Re: painting examples by skolo
: ced_spectre1 June 09, 2013, 11:52:59 AM
I agree with the dark tones for zombies, although strong is okay, the dark really makes things pop and look dirty. I like the strong and soft tones on skin features depending on the look I am going for. I dont have the dip cans, is there any difference from the washes in color/tone/etc? What technique do you use with the dips? Do you dip and shake to get the excess off?
: Re: painting examples by skolo
: skolo June 10, 2013, 02:06:23 AM
there is a huge difference in my opinion. inks and dips are very different. When I had full can I dip and shake off. Now I use my brush.

That's how it works. Basecoat then dip. Either brush on the dip, or dip the miniature into the dip. Sometimes you spray the dipped miniature with dullcoat (?) to reduce glossiness. The dip is similar to wood varnish. BoardGameGeek has a good amount of dipping advice, as does ArmyPainter.com . I'm pretty sure "if you do it right" you can't tell if a miniature has been dipped or washed.

While washes are typically used after basecoating, you can also use it after priming to add shadows and blacklining. This prewashing also reduces the dreaded "white areas" when you're trying to paint two adjacent areas without the paint of one area overlapping the painted section of another. Depending on how the eyes were sculpted, it can outline the eye socket in black. I don't know why it's so rare I read about painting the eye this way, but it saves a *lot* of work!

Prewash: http://privateerpressforums.com/showthread.php?30053-Effectiveness-of-pre-wash-(ink)-on-miniatures-help-suggestions&s=37b8ef7c2d622916e53a277fcf288a7e&p=439400&viewfull=1#post439400
: Re: painting examples by skolo

Nice thanks for the info, I use washes of different colors and tones and was looking into the dips as a way to speed up the process. Epecially when the giant box of MYTH minis arrives, anything that can help save time while looking good is a step in the right direction.

With just the 6 heroes left from Zombicide, I had a taste of whats to come haha

: Re: painting examples by skolo
: RemiBureau August 27, 2013, 09:02:57 PM
I don't recognize all the models, but it seems to be from Descent, and the only difference between minions and masters is usually the color of the model (white : minion, ref : master), so it's a good way to differentiate the monsters.
: Re: painting examples by skolo
: skolo August 28, 2013, 08:35:37 AM
Red/white is point of difference between minion monster and master monster, boss of a group. stronger one with more powers to kill heroes.
I used to do that but its not necessary (FFG is using red/white plastic for minion/monster)

: Re: painting examples by skolo

Time to share some photos of my painting process. Everyone has his own, that is for sure, but as I do not have much time and I`m not a professional painter I need use some tricks (with inks dipping etc.

I usually start with the undercoat, primer. I have a photo of a miniature in front of my eyes (like Descent art or similar) and try to match as closely as possible base color of a miniature.

Example below shows my work in progress. In this case major color of the Drake is green so I prime it green.

From the other hand I also use black and skeleton bone (not white) for monsters and heroes as well

For High Mage Quellen I have already applied flesh skin tone.

After the base color I paint rest of the basic colors, not adding any fireworks - red, necro flesh, white, brown, metal etc.

You can see here that those monsters had blue as a base (check out the monster cards) and I have added red, white, bronze as details.

Those above were also shaded using Army Painter strong shade or AK Interactive streaking grime giving them little bit of complexity.

next post with details and basing - finishing the model
: Re: painting examples by skolo
: skolo September 03, 2013, 08:44:59 AM
Starting from High Mage Quellen

I have used basic color for his clothes, gold for rings and strips and barbarian flesh for his skin, yellow for hair.
Some static grass for the base (not a lot, because its thin surface).
Everything was inked with strong tone army painter. When it was already dry I have used again tamiya flash for the skin, some gold and white for his shirt.

next post - reaver and arachnya, from previous posts
: Re: painting examples by skolo
: skolo September 03, 2013, 09:49:38 AM
time for the monsters

model primed blue, as per previous photos
little bit of basic colors - red, white, black
inked with streaking grime (AK) and strong tone (Army Painter)
alien purple for the master monster.
after its dry - again red, white for claws, little bit of blue brush (lighter blue)

base - army painters little black and brown rocks, little bit of grass
